What Is Vaping?

Vaping means inhaling vapour produced by an electronic device rather than smoke from burning tobacco. A vape heats a liquid known as e-liquid or vape juice — until it turns into an inhalable vapour. Unlike a cigarette, there's no combustion, no tar, and no ash. According to the NHS, while vaping is not risk-free, it is substantially less harmful than smoking and is one of the most effective tools available for helping smokers quit.

Most new vapers come to it for one of two reasons: they're switching from cigarettes and want a less harmful alternative, or they're simply curious about trying flavours and devices that don't involve tobacco at all. Either way, understanding the basics first will save you money and frustration.

How Does a Vape Work?

Every vape, from the simplest disposable-style pod to an advanced kit, is built around the same core components:

  • Battery — powers the device, either built-in and rechargeable or a removable cell.
  • Coil — a small heating element that turns e-liquid into vapour. Coils wear out over time and need replacing.
  • Tank or pod — holds the e-liquid and houses the coil.
  • E-liquid — the liquid you inhale, made from PG, VG, flavourings, and usually nicotine.

When you draw on the device (or press a button, depending on the model), the battery powers the coil, which heats the e-liquid soaked into the coil's wick until it vaporises. You then inhale that vapour. That's the entire process the differences between devices come down to power output, refill method, and how the airflow is tuned for different inhaling styles.

Choosing Your First Device

The right first device depends mainly on how you plan to use it and, if you're switching from smoking, how many cigarettes you currently smoke a day. A few starting points:

  • If you want the simplest possible switch from smoking: a prefilled pod kit removes the need to fill tanks or choose separate e-liquid you simply click in a pod and go. Explore our prefilled pod vape kits.
  • If you want more control over flavour and cost per ml: a refillable pod kit costs slightly more upfront but works out cheaper over time, since you buy e-liquid separately rather than pre-filled pods. See our refillable vape pods.
  • If you're a heavier smoker (20+ a day): look for a device compatible with higher nicotine strengths and a tighter, cigarette-like draw this is usually described as an MTL (mouth-to-lung) device.

Two of our most popular starter-friendly devices are the IVG Pro 12 Vape Kit and the Aspire Gotek X III Pod Vape Kit both are straightforward, low-maintenance options well suited to someone buying their first device.

Whichever device you choose, you'll also need coils on hand as consumables see our vape coils range for compatible replacements once your first coil wears out (usually after one to three weeks of regular use, depending on how much you vape).

Nic Salts vs Freebase, Explained

Once you've picked a device, you'll need to choose an e-liquid and almost every e-liquid on the market is either a nicotine salt or a freebase nicotine liquid. The difference matters more than most beginners expect:

  • Nic salts use a naturally occurring form of nicotine that's smoother at higher strengths (10mg–20mg) and is absorbed slightly faster, closely mimicking the hit of a cigarette. They're designed for low-power pod kits  the type most beginners start with. Browse our nic salts range.
  • Freebase nicotine is the traditional form used in most e-liquids, typically found at lower strengths (3mg–18mg) and better suited to higher-power devices with bigger clouds and a softer throat hit. See our full e-liquids selection.

For most people starting out on a simple pod kit, nic salts are the more comfortable choice they're less harsh at the higher strengths a former smoker is likely to need. If you smoked around a pack a day, 20mg nic salt is a common starting point; lighter smokers often do better starting at 10mg.

Vaping is legal for adults across the UK. By law, you must be 18 or over to purchase vaping products, and retailers including Nextgen Vapes are required to verify your age before completing a sale. Vaping products sold in the UK must also be TPD-compliant, meaning they meet regulatory limits on tank/pod size, e-liquid bottle size, and nicotine strength (capped at 20mg/ml).

UK vaping regulation continues to evolve, including recent changes affecting disposable vapes and new duty on e-liquids. If you want to understand how current and upcoming rules affect what you can buy, this is worth revisiting periodically as the law develops through 2026 and beyond.
