If you've started researching vape kits, you've probably seen the terms "MTL" and "DTL" everywhere  and they matter more than most beginners realise. Your inhale style affects which device you should buy, which e-liquid works best, and even how similar the experience feels to smoking a cigarette. Here's exactly what each term means and how to choose between them.

What Is MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) Vaping?

MTL stands for mouth-to-lung. You draw vapour into your mouth first, hold it briefly, then inhale it into your lungs exactly the same two-step motion as smoking a cigarette. This is why MTL devices are usually recommended to anyone switching from smoking: the inhale feels familiar from day one.

MTL devices use a tighter, more restricted draw (similar to sucking through a coffee stirrer rather than a straw), higher-resistance coils, and lower power output. They're almost always paired with nic salt e-liquids, since nic salts deliver a smooth, fast nicotine hit even at the higher strengths 10mg or 20mg that former smokers typically need. If you're completely new to vaping, our beginner's guide to vaping covers the basics of how a device works before you get into inhale styles.

What Is DTL (Direct-to-Lung) Vaping?

DTL stands for direct-to-lung. Instead of holding vapour in your mouth first, you draw it straight into your lungs in one motion much like taking a deep breath. This produces significantly more vapour and a softer throat hit, which is why DTL is the style most associated with big cloud production.

DTL devices use a looser, more open draw, lower-resistance (sub-ohm) coils, and considerably higher power output than MTL kits. They're generally paired with freebase e-liquids at lower nicotine strengths (3mg–6mg is common), since inhaling that much vapour with a high nicotine strength would be far too harsh. Browse our full e-liquids range to see freebase options suited to this style.

Key Differences at a Glance

Feature MTL DTL

Best for Beginners and ex-smokers Cloud and flavour chasers
Coil resistance Higher (above 1.0 ohm) Lower / sub-ohm (below 1.0 ohm)
Typical nicotine type Nic salts (10–20mg) Freebase (3–6mg)
Vapour production Lower Higher
Device type Pod kits, starter kits Sub-ohm tanks, higher-wattage mods

Which Style Is Right for You?

There's no universally "better" option — it comes down to why you're vaping:

  • Switching from cigarettes: start with MTL. The familiar draw and higher nicotine strength make it the easiest transition, and it's why almost every stop-smoking-focused kit on the market is built around MTL.
  • Never smoked, curious about vaping: MTL is still the more beginner-friendly starting point  it's easier to control and less likely to cause coughing.
  • Already comfortable vaping and want bigger clouds or bolder flavour: DTL is worth exploring once you've got the basics down, though it requires a bigger device and different e-liquid.

Many vapers stick with MTL indefinitely, particularly those using it as a long-term cigarette replacement there's no requirement to "graduate" to DTL.

Most of our range is built around MTL pod kits, since this is what the majority of UK vapers particularly those switching from smoking are looking for. Two straightforward options to start with:
